A Different Way of Working With Adults
Some therapeutic work with adults benefits from approaches that go beyond conversation alone.
Experiential or play-based work methods can support adults to explore patterns, emotions, and lived experiences in ways that feel grounded, contained, and respectful, particularly when words are limited or feel unsafe.
At Big Bear’s Treehouse, adult experiential or play-based work work is not offered as a standalone individual therapy service.
Instead, it is used intentionally as part of structured, program-based work where relational safety, pacing, and preparation are already established.
How This Work Is Currently Offered
Adult play-based and experiential approaches are currently offered as an adjunct within specific programs, where participants are supported over time and within a clear therapeutic framework.
This allows the work to remain:
carefully paced
relationally grounded
emotionally safe
integrated rather than isolated
Individual adult experiential or play-based work sessions may be considered in the future, but this is not a current offering.
What This Kind of Work Might Involve
Within a program context, adult experiential or play-based work may include:
experiential and reflective activities
symbolic or creative exploration
nervous-system-aware practices
sandtray and metaphor-based work (where appropriate)
Participation is always invitational, not directive. Adults are never asked to do anything that does not feel safe or appropriate for them.
A Note About Readiness
This work is not about “being playful” or revisiting experiences prematurely. It is about creating enough safety for reflection, insight, and reconnection to occur — gently, respectfully, and at the participant’s pace.
